Background and Aim: Undoubtedly, the increasing growth of the Internet has undeniable benefits and importance. Despite this, we should not ignore it’s unfortunate and destructive consequences, especially in psychological fields. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect size of the psychological consequences of Internet addiction.
Method:
It is fundamental in terms of the purpose and a mata-analysis review in terms of method. The statistical population of the research consisted 95 domestic articles and theses over the past 20 years and 46 articles were selected using non-random sampling with inclusive criteria. A coding form was used to collect the required data. Data analysis was performed using CMA2 software.
Results: Social isolation (ES, 0.60), aggression (ES, 0.45), mental health (ES, -0.42), stress (ES, 0.40), feeling alone (ES, 0.39), anxiety (ES, 0.39), aggression (ES, 0.45), depression (ES, 0.36), quality of life (ES, -0.28) and sleep quality (ES, -0.22) are respectively the strongest the results were identified. Due to the heterogeneity in studies, studies with validity (ES, 0.27) have a larger effect size than studies without validation (ES, 0.11); also, the effect size of the systematic sampling method (ES, 0.52) was higher than other sampling methods.
Conclusion: In general, the review of research showed that the phenomenon of Internet addiction has significant psychological effects, and therefore it is necessary to consider the framework of researches that have dealt with the psychological factors influencing it; designed programs to prevent and intervene in this destructive phenomenon. |
