چکیده انگلیسی مقاله Abstract As the traffic on two-lane roadways increases reaching a congested state or something not far off, converting two-lane roadways into four-lane roadways gains in importance. Even though this conversion is usually based on the need for providing a better level of service in order to transfer the increased traffic, it will also result in safety advantages by improving safety owing to the decreased number of accidents along with offering better level of service to the users. This research aims at putting forward an estimation of safety improvement in converting two-lane into four-lane roadways divided via the cross-section method. Through modeling accidents in two-lane and four-lane roadways, converting two-lane roadways into four-lane roadways is studied by comparing the results of accident prediction models. The entire two-lane and four-lane roadways under study are selected from southern Iran. The traffic data used was obtained from road maintenance and transportation organization and the accident data from the highway police bureau. This research demonstrates that converting two-lane roadways into fourlane roadways will lead to at least a 60 percent decrease in the rate of accidents.
