Today, the high incidence of crashes resulting in injuries and fatalities remains a stubborn challenge to socio-economic wellbeing as well as to public health. This study presents a comprehensive approach using spatial analysis and data mining to analyze the severity of highway corridors crashes and identify the most contributing factors. The approach implements classification and regression tree (CART) approach on a database of spatial data and four year period accident records in the study corridor (Qazvin-Rasht ). The study tries to consider effect of spatial factors on crash severity beside other common contributing factors. The results show that because of the graphical nature of proposed method the effect of different factors on crash severity can be easily understood and interpreted. Moreover, the results indicated that beside vehicle failure, visibility obstacle and using seatbelt, curve and the spatial distribution and prevalence of activities and land uses in the proximity of highway corridors are the most important factors affecting the severity of injuries and increase opportunities for crash occurrences. |
